About Studio J Inc. Workshops

Welcome to Studio J Inc. and our photography workshop program here in Las Vegas. My name is Eric Jamison and I am the owner of Studio J Inc. I am very excited you have come to us to advance your skills as a photographer. Whether you are a novice photographer, simply looking for a better understanding of your camera (perhaps to take better family pictures) or whether you’re a career professional seriously looking for a career change, you have come to the right place. Our workshops are not your typical classes offered at the local college. These courses will be taught in studio, at Studio J, with a very small number of students in attendance. My vision is to keep the classes small, so they are personal and very effective. The classes will be very hands on, very fluid and very informational, with lots of Q&A. You will be surrounded by all the professional tools and instruction you will need to achieve your individual goals. You will not be burying your heads in a how to book for two hours straight; I promise you that!

Please review the course descriptions on the following page and feel free to contact us anytime with questions. I look forward to hearing from each and every one of you.

Our Prices & Schedules

We have recently decided to discontinue our group workshops until further notice as our assignment work has been keeping us very busy and we have very little time to organize and execute these group workshops effectively. We do, however, still offer private one on one workshops where you spend a minimum of 2 hours working 1 on 1 with one of our instructors to learn exactly what you need to know to accomplish your photography goals. Whether it be something as simple as Camera Fundamentals or as advanced as Digital Retouching, we can customize your personal workshop to fit your needs.

Private workshops are currently $150 per hour with a minimum of 2 hours per workshop scheduled.

Email us today at Info@studiojinc.com to schedule your workshop.

Course Description

Camera Fundamentals

Well you have to start somewhere, right? This photography workshop gets down to the basics of what you need to know and how to use any camera. The principals in large part are all the same whether you’re shooting film, digital, small format, large format, Nikon or Canon. We will show you how to use your camera and to understand the principals of photography. This includes learning how to shoot your camera on manual, how to read the camera’s internal light meter, how to read a histogram and how to make great compositions. We will also cover basic white balance, ISO’s, file quality, as well as file recovery and post production.

Yes, we all want to be creative and make great pictures; however, I am a firm believer that you must have an understanding of how the camera works, to achieve your desired result. Boring? Perhaps a little . . . but wait till you see the results of your knowledge!

Intermediate

So, you've made it through the Camera Fundamentals Workshop and you now have a much better understanding of how your camera works; well, get ready to be pushed a bit! The Intermediate Workshop will reinforce what you have learned in Camera Fundamentals and will push your new skills even further. Your knowledge of the camera will start to become second nature and your goal of creating even more professional quality imagery will be that much closer. This class will be much more hands on than Camera Fundamentals, with much of the class time actually spent behind the camera understanding and learning what we are teaching, by actually doing it.

Intermediate Workshop will further explore how to use your camera with a flash (manually), perfecting your compositions, the use of filters, as well as exploring metering modes. It will also cover shooting modes, auto focus modes, camera drives, basic post production work flow, basic image dusting, retouching, enhancing and introduction to color temperature and lighting.

  • Required Equipment : External Flash with Swivel Head
  • Recommended Equipment : Quantum Power

Photoshop Overview

Now that you are familiar with using the camera, it’s time to dive into the second half of producing captivating imagery. In this digital age, Photoshop and post production techniques have become an essential part of the creative photography process. This class is designed to familiarize you with the principles of Photoshop. Here, we will be discussing not only the tools and layout, but mainly how the program functions using layers and masks. Once you have an understanding of the principles of Photoshop, you will be able to achieve almost any creative look imaginable. Do not be fooled; this is a very important step in truly understanding such a powerful piece of software.

  • Required Equipment: laptop with Adobe CS4/CS3
  • Recommended Equipment : Wacom Tablet (or mouse) and External Hard Drive

Photoshop Portrait Techniques

Welcome to our portrait workshop. At this point in your progress, you should have completed the Camera Fundamentals & Intermediate Workshops; we also recommend having completed Photoshop Overview. Exceptions to this will be made, especially for students who already have advanced skills. Students are expected to have a very general understanding of the program and its most basic functions. This class is where the creative work begins. We will be covering a lot of information and having a great time using cutting edge techniques to really make great portraits. We will cover everything from how to crop and size an image, to removing wrinkles and blemishes, coloring, all the way down to creative overlays, that really add style to each image. We will also discuss the best techniques for each situation, from quick down and dirty, to refined and professional. Our scenario specific exercises will also cover the importance of size constraints, saving file types and actions used to increase productivity. These techniques will help you boost your work to a more professional level, while speeding up the processing time. With a little direction, you can take your creativity to greater heights.

Refresher Course

You've made it through one of our workshops and have been subjected to a tremendous amount of complicated information. Not to mention, that you had to absorb it all in a short period of time! Now that you’ve been out in the field, practicing these new found tools, you probably still have some questions. So, based on student demand and to better prep you for our next level course, we are now offering a Refresher Workshop. We will briefly revisit much of what was taught in your previous workshop class and answer all of your latest questions. We encourage students to bring some of their work to class, so we may troubleshoot questions easier. This class will last for 2 hours, one evening only, for both our Camera Fundamentals and Intermediate Workshop students. We highly recommend this class be taken in between each of the workshops! We are looking forward to having you all in studio, to assist you, as needed.

Introduction to Studio Lighting

Welcome to Studio Lighting! It's hard enough, learning to use your camera like a pro, now add 5 lights, a back drop, power packs, soft boxes, stands, radio slaves, sand bags and a 5 year old screaming at you! LOL. It's a tough racket and you need to have your skills dialed and confidence up, before you set up for your first shoot. There's a lot of gear to learn and this is the class where your journey begins. This workshop offers students a hands on introduction to some of the most common photography equipment used today by professionals. We will review all that you need to know, in great detail, including how to use mono lights, strobes and power packs, softboxes, umbrellas, radio slaves, and much, much more. In addition, we will explore studio lighting equipment options, at a variety of price levels. Studio gear is very expensive and if your're just getting started, we'll show you how to get by with less in the beginning. Finally once the gear is reviewed, you will begin creating your first studio shoot, with the help of our instructors. Looking forward to having you in our workshop and welcome, to the first step in learning to work studio lighting.
